Canadian Gambling Law

The Criminal Code of Canada was amended in 2021 (Bill C-218) to allow single-game sports betting. Before this, only parlay bets were legal through provincial lottery corporations.

Ontario went furthest: iGaming Ontario launched in April 2022 and now has 50+ licensed operators including DraftKings, BetMGM, Bet365, PointsBet, FanDuel, and more. It's the most open regulated market in North America.

Other provinces (BC, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, etc.) still operate through provincial Crown corporations (PlayNow, Sports Interaction via Loto-Quebec, etc.) but residents can also access offshore sites legally.

Canadian Betting Tax

Canada has no federal tax on gambling winnings for recreational bettors. Professional gamblers may owe income tax. The CRA's position: if gambling is your primary income source, winnings are taxable. For recreational bettors, keep everything.
